Shelter Under His Wings: Verse 1, Psalm 91

Up in the night, I took refuge on my closet floor. A place where I have found shelter under His wings (verse 4, Psalm 91) so many times before.
I had just read an entry from 2017 on Psalm 91 about cultivating history with God. And then I noticed an old journal from 2019, marked with a fresh tear drop on the page. It was also about Psalm 91. So now the Lord was really getting my attention since I had just read about the same psalm!
I didn’t remember crying, so I looked up. But there were no drips. I wondered if it was a drop of revival rain or if maybe it was a tear from heaven. Either way, it sure got my attention so I read the entry.
Shelters me under his wings
For context, I wrote this about a week before we moved to Colorado for our final military move while my husband and I sorted and packed up our clothes for the move in boxes. Just weeks before I lost him.
May 2019
“This weekend, I spent sometime reading through The Struggle Is Real But So Is God by Misty Philips. I read the Bible verses Psalm 91 and Isaiah 55: 11, which the Lord sends me to over and over!
His Word WILL accomplish all that He has planned and it will succeed in all it’s purposes. Isaiah 55:11
After reading God’s Word in Psalm 91 about how God’s my Refuge, my Fortress, the God in whom I trust… After reading about how He’ll save me from the fowler’s snare and command angels concerning me. How He covers me with His feathers and under His wings I’ll find refuge… I went to work on my closet.
I started sorting out my clothes for the move. Dan was doing the same thing on the far end, deciding on what to bring. His AF Blues and mess dress and BDUs. I knelt down and bent forward on the closet floor, sorting out what I’ll wear and possibly need in this summer move ahead.
And then BAM!
A huge heavy box full of clothes on the top shelf fell right onto my back and side. Flank/ribs area. The suitcase that was on top of that box fell on me as well. I didn’t move. Mostly stunned. I didn’t speak. I started to cry a little and softly.
Dan immediately dropped down to his knees to where I was on the floor. He wrapped his arms and whole body around me. I felt completely shielded, covered, surrounded. He prayed over me too.
He will cover you with his feathers.
He will shelter you with his wings.
His faithful promises are your armor and protection.
In that moment, God just healed me. No severe joints out of place. No pain or desperate need for a chiropractor. (Which is a miracle. Truly.)
Dan and I marveled at how that heavy box would’ve slammed my head and neck if I were just six inches closer to the door. Now, I marvel too that Dan was on the far side of the closet… safe, and with me.
So I wasn’t alone.
It was a horrible thing that happened, but God really did protect me. I know angels were on duty and Dan was there to comfort and pray and the pain left immediately.
I think this will be one of my fondest memories of my husband too.
Because I got to experience a physical picture of what it looks and feels like when God covers us with His feathers and hides us under His wings (Verse 1, Psalm 91). Dan wrapped over me and praying powerfully was a picture of what it looks like when God is our fortress.
Sure, I could’ve felt victimized or traumatized or attacked. But instead, that moment only reminded me of just how very protected and sheltered I really am.
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.”
Read Psalm 91 today. Dwell in His shadow. Take refuge in Him.
Wow. We used to pray Psalm 91 over Dan every day he deployed. Read all of Psalm 91 here. I have a lot to process about that memory now, knowing that it would only be a few weeks later that I lost my husband in the middle of that move.
Regardless. This memory is a picture of God’s healing, wrap-around presence. And I’m going to rest in that picture today. I invite you to rest in that too.
Til next time… Toodle-loo, and Peace be with you.
