Be Careful Little Ears What You Hear

What you listen to matters more than most Chrisitan’s think. If “Faith comes by hearing and by hearing the word of God,” could we also deduce that disbelief comes by hearing, by hearing the word of the enemy? Podcasts, music, movies, sermons, TedTalks, a grumbling friend, a bitter family member. What and who you listen to matter. Even if you say you’re not going to let those things affect you, they are like seeds. If you don’t uproot each one immediately, the seeds get planted. So be careful little ears what you hear.
Over the years, I’ve heard countless stories about how musicians and movie producers will hire the occult to curse the music and those curses carry over to the hearers. Yes, even if subliminally.
My pastor told us an amazing story about when he first discovered this firsthand. He bought some subliminal self-help cassette tapes. One cassette had instrumental music with words spoken subliminally in the background. The other had the words spoken in the music audibly so you could hear what they were saying. After a day or so of listening to this, he noticed things that were off in his home and then he had a dream that there were demons coming out of his cassette player. So he woke up and turned off his subliminal music tape and then drove to his office to find the one with the words. When he listened to the actual words, he was shocked. It was a huge eye opener that what we listen to matters more than we know.
So let’s not dabble. It’s not worth it.
I recently heard a sermon by a little boy, about age ten at our church when the kids got to take a turn preaching. He compared what we watch and listen to is like food we eat. And he says, “Do you want to live on junk food or healthy food?” He did an awesome job preaching! Even though a lot of adults know better, they’re still filling their thoughts with voices of social media and all kinds of podcasts and music that is either actually blatantly damaging to their souls or deceptively harming their faith or is just plain malnourishing.
I’ll add a bonus thought here for you… sometimes we need to break soul ties with particular songs. My prayer pastor just taught me this recently and it had never occured to me. But there was a song I listened to on repeat one summer in middle school, and he was right, I needed to break ties with that sucker and not let it have power over me anymore.
Sometimes, we have made unhealthy agreements in our hearts because of song lyrics we aligned with. So ask the Lord if there are any old dried up songs in your closet that you need to clean out today. I’m going to guess you’ll need to go back to middle school or high school or college and see if any songs had a grip on your emotions. It might have felt like comfort at the time, but if the song really was just commiserating with your anger or abandonment or hatred, etc, then I recommend you break ties with those songs and lyrics. Be set free.
That’s food for thought today.
Til next time… Toodle-loo, and Peace be with you.
