A Modern Psalm of Ascents

There’s something really healing about writing your own psalm to the Lord. Here’s a modern-day psalm of ascents that I penned this morning. Read it as encouragement if you’re weary on your journey following the Lord, but also read it as inspiration to try your hand and write your own psalm today. A Modern Psalm of Ascents

Father God in Heaven,

I am so weary

That I can barely keep my eyes open.

My body aches from stress.

My shoulders are in constant pain,

Likely from the weight of what I carry.

 So I come to you today,

and I tell my soul to put your hope in God.

I lift my eyes up to you Lord.

You are where my Help comes from.

You promise to be my Ever-Present Help in Time of Need.

Well, I need you right now.

 I remember the times

you came through for me in the past.

 I remember the ways you parted the seas.

Why do you never do things

the way I imagine they will go?

Because you are God,

and I am not,

and your plan is bigger than I have eyes to see.

Lord, I’ve surrendered everything to you.

You know this.

Please keep your promises to me,

And pour out your blessings on my children

And my children’s children.

You promised, and you always keep your word.

Against my flesh, I lift my hands to the sky

And force a hallelujah from my lips. Why?

It’s all I know to do

when the weight crushes me on every side.

Somehow, it pushes out a sacrifice of praise.

Because Jesus paid it all,

I will follow you all my days,

And when I think I can’t bare more suffering,

I see His face.

Following you is not easy,

This is harder than hard.

Your ways are not linear,

And they feel upside down

And inside out.

Your plan for my life

Causes me great agony, and often.

And yet I trust you.

Because being in your presence

Is worth the high cost

of following in your footsteps.
