Don’t look back

I keep thinking about Lot’s wife. What was back there in that wretched place of Sodom and Gomorrah that made her look back longingly? From just the little stories they tell us about it, it was a place where she saw gross perversion and a level of godlessness I don’t think we can comprehend. So why did she look back, wishing to go back?
The instructions were clear. Flee! “Escape for your life. Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley.”
It rained sulfur and fire, and all we know is Lot’s wife looked back longingly and turned into a pillar of salt. I don’t see any mention of her again, and no grieving her loss. Just then she became salt.
I keep wondering about this. And why salt?
Too much salt makes you want to spit a good thing out. Too much salt means you can’t drink the water. Too much salt in someone’s attitude means they’re hard to be around.
God was mercifully sparing her and her family, even with all the disgusting things they did and said. Even with all the lack of of purity and respect for each other. God still showed so much mercy.
I wonder how to take this warning to heart. I think sometimes God is mercifully sparing us from a situation, but on the way out, we decide… but that was known, that comfortable, that was “home.” Home is never really going to be this side of heaven. Hebrews 11 hall of faith-ers show us that. They were rewarded for setting their hearts in a heavenly home.
We also sometimes look back and only remember what was good all the sudden and long to go back, to the way it was. When God has so much more in store.
Really, this is one I just have questions about and would love to hear your thoughts too. Why do you think she turned into salt?
Til next time, toodle-loo and peace be with you.
